U.K. Considers More Troops For Afghanistan

A British soldier in Kabul in May (epa) July 6, 2006 -- British Defense Minister Des Browne said today the government is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan after commanders in the field requested additional forces.

"I can now confirm that today I have received advice on additional deployment [of troops to Afghanistan] and I am considering it," Browne told journalists today. "I am considering it as a matter of urgency, and I am considering it as a matter of urgency with the [military] Chiefs of Staff."


Browne did not indicate how many troops were requested or when they might be deployed.
