July 7, 2006 -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai says foreign terrorists are behind a recent surge in deadly militant attacks in his country.
He said attacks are carried out by "terrorists from abroad who are equipped, financed, and sent to Afghanistan."
Karzai also said Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries in the region should cooperate more effectively and "much more sincerely" to stop terrorism and eliminate its sources of training and financing.
Karzai made the comments at a news conference today in Tokyo, at the end of a four-day visit to Japan.
During the visit, Karzai met with government officials and attended a conference on disbanding illegal armed groups in Afghanistan.
Karzai asked Japan for its continued support in fighting rebels and eradicating the drugs trade in Afghanistan.
