UN Says Ukraine Canal Threatens Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is the largest in Europe (AFP) July 10, 2006 -- A scientific report for the United Nations released today argues that a proposed Ukrainian canal that would slice through the Danube Delta would cause serious damage to wildlife in one of Europe's most prized wetlands.

The study said the Bystroe canal would destroy the nesting and feeding sites of unique bird colonies and spawning and nursery areas for fish.

Ukraine began dredging and construction work on its side of the border in 2004.

The project has sparked tensions between Ukraine and Romania, which share the Delta, and drawn criticism from the EU and environmental groups.
