Afghan Police Publicly Burn Liquor

Afghan police burn smuggled liquor and drugs in Kabul in June (epa) July 17, 2006 -- Police in the Afghan capital, Kabul, today burned some 600 bottles of wine and spirits and about 3,000 cans of beer confiscated during recent raids.

Interior Minister Abdul Jabar Sabit called the alcohol "poison."


A government-appointed clerical council a few days ago recommended reviving the religious police to ensure religious rules, such as not drinking alcohol, are observed.
