July 23, 2006 -- A Pakistani police official says Pakistan handed over 58 prisoners to Afghanistan today.
The transfer comes about a week after a large-scale Pakistani operation aimed at apprehending suspected Taliban members in and around the western Pakistani city of Quetta.
Around 250 Afghan suspects were detained. More than 50 of the detainees were later released.
In Afghanistan itself, police say an Afghan intelligence official has been caught with 33 kilograms of heroin in a government vehicle.
The officer was arrested last week on a major drug trafficking route to Tajikistan.
Afghanistan is the world's leading producer of opium. Tajikistan is a major transit route for Afghan narcotics to Russia and Europe.
