Earthquakes Rattle Eastern Russia

A Kamchatka landscape (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) August 18, 2006 -- A strong earthquake jolted the eastern Russian province of Sakhalin today, causing some minor injuries.

Some structural damage to buildings and water pipes was also reported. The tremor, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter was some 20 kilometers southwest of Sakhalin Island.


Another quake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, shook the eastern side of Kamchatka.


No injuries were reported.
