Top Russian Aluminum Firms May Merge

The head of RusAl, Oleg Deripaska, pictured (right) at a meeting in early August with Russian President Vladimir Putin (ITAR-TASS) August 21, 2006 -- Russia's two biggest aluminum makers are said to be planning a merger that would create the world's largest producer of the metal.

The "Kommersant" business daily reported in Moscow today that the two companies, RusAl and Sual, plan to unveil the merger plan officially in October.


Together, the two companies produced more than 3.7 million tons of aluminum last year.
