September 11, 2006 -- Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors say they have launched an investigation into the activities of the army's chief of staff as part of a probe into an army contract with a private company.
Prosecutors offered few details about the investigation of General Eugen Badalan and 12 other former and current defense ministry officers.
The European Union is set to announce on September 26 whether Romania and Bulgaria have made enough progress in fighting corruption and bureaucracy to qualify for membership in 2007.
