September 22, 2006 -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai today called on Canada to keep its troops in Afghanistan to continue helping the country stabilize and rebuild.
Speaking at the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Karzai urged Canada not to be discouraged by increasing deaths of its troops on Afghan soil. He said their efforts are keeping the world safe from terrorism.
Karzai is in Canada for a three-day state visit. During his stay, Karzai is expected to meet with family members of Canadian soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan. Since 2002, 36 Canadian troops and a senior diplomat have died there.
In his address to the UN General Assembly on September 21, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the international community cannot afford to fail in Afghanistan.
Canada maintains around 2,300 troops serving with NATO-led forces in southern Afghanistan.
