Rabies Outbreak Strikes Southern Kyrgyzstan

October 4, 2006 -- Reports from Kyrgyzstan's southern Osh region say more than 1,000 stray dogs have been slaughtered in the Kara-suu border area after two children and an adult died of rabies.
The Kyrgyz Emergencies Ministry says the three victims lived in the village of Kenjekul and had been bitten by dogs.

The ministry says health authorities have also started a vaccination campaign in the area.
