October 12, 2006 -- A Russian lawmaker leading an independent probe into the Beslan school raid claims there were more than twice as many attackers as officials state.
Government investigators contend that 32 armed rebels stormed the school in September 2004 in a siege that led to the death of 333 people, most of them children. However, Yuri Savelyev claims there were as many as 78 attackers.
Critics say his findings could embarrass authorities as they suggest attackers were able to escape.
