October 28, 2006 -- The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan says about 70 people were killed in attacks targeting Taliban militants this week.
However, the force says it is still unsure how many civilians were killed. On October 27, ISAF confirmed 12 civilian deaths.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has appointed a commission to investigate NATO attacks in the southern Kandahar Province on October 24 that local officials say killed dozens of civilians.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch has called on NATO to heed calls for maximum caution in its antiinsurgency operations across Afghanistan.
NATO accuses Taliban militants of using civilian areas for cover and has said it regrets all loss of civilian life as a result of its operations.
