Macedonian Students Protest Schengen Regime

(RFE/RL) November 10, 2006 -- Around 1,000 Macedonian students have demonstrated, demanding that Schengen system member states open their borders to citizens of Macedonia.

The November 9 protest -- under the slogan "Visa? Forget about it!" -- was aimed at abolishing the Schengen system, which allows passport-free travel for participating countries but restricts entry for outsiders.

The protest was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.
