Contraband Cigarettes Seized From Georgia-Bound Ship

(RFE/RL) November 26, 2006 -- Bulgarian police seized about 14 million contraband cigarettes on a ship off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast near Varna early today.
Officials say police found the cargo on a Turkish-registered ship travelling from Varna to Georgia.

The Bulgarians intercepted crew members as they tried to smuggle part of the 1,400 boxes ashore on a smaller boat. Some 25 men suspected of being involved were arrested, including three Turkish nationals and two Bulgarian border police.
