Court Orders Kyrgyz Opposition Member Back To Jail

December 1, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- A member of the Kyrgyz opposition was ordered back to jail by a Bishkek city court today, 24 hours after a lower panel ruled that he should be released.
An Ata Meken (Fatherland) statement says the November 30 court ruling that set Bakyt Kalpetov free under the care of two opposition lawmakers was overturned "within three minutes."

Kalpetov is accused of assaulting a top state-television executive.

Fellow party members say the charges are politically motivated.

Assault In South

Kyrgyz media today reported that a member of the For Reforms opposition movement, Edil Baisalov, was assaulted in the southern city of Osh. The incident took place on November 30 at Osh airport, while Baisalov was waiting to board a plane.

Also today, tax police detained the wife of another For Reforms member.

Omurbek Abdrakhmanov's wife, Beyysh Aidakeeva, runs a furniture shop in Bishkek. Police say they wanted to question her.
