12 Killed In Afghan Battles

Canadian soldiers guard the site of a suicide attack in the southern city of Kandahar on December 6 (epa) December 11, 2006 -- A police chief in Afghanistan's western province of Farah says U.S. troops and warplanes attacked a Taliban hideout overnight, killing nine Taliban fighters.

Sayed Afgha Saqeb says regional Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Samad was among those killed in the operation, in Balabuluk district.


In the south of the country, police say they killed another three Taliban militants after insurgents attacked their checkpoint.
