New U.S. Defense Secretary Arrives In Iraq

Robert Gates, the new U.S. secretary of defense (file photo) (epa) December 20, 2006 -- New U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Baghdad today to meet U.S. commanders and see for himself a war that he says the United States is neither winning nor losing.

The visit by the former CIA director follows a new Pentagon report that said Iraq is more violent than ever and at a time when U.S. fatalities are nearing 3,000.


Gates was sworn in as defense secretary two days ago.
