Tajik Supreme Court Updates Terror List

Tajik Prosecutor-General Bobojon Bobokhonov in 2005 (RFE/RL) January 15, 2007 -- The Tajik Supreme Court last year added 10 organizations and political groups to the country's official terror list.

The announcement was made today by Prosecutor-General Bobojon Bobokhonov.

Bobokhonov told reporters that the newly banned groupings include the Islamic Party of Turkestan and Tochikistoni Ozod (Free Tajikistan), an Uzbekistan-based political party that authorities say represents a threat to Tajikistan's national security.

Meanwhile, Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov has begun a six-day visit to neighboring China.

Rakhmonov is scheduled to meet today with his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao. Later this week, he is due to attend a Tajik-Chinese business forum in Beijing.

He will also visit China's giant Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. Several bilateral economic documents are expected to be signed during Rakhmonov's visit.
