Russia Suggests New Kosovo Envoy Needed

Current UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari (OSCE) March 18, 2007 -- Russian Security Council head Igor Ivanov said today that a new UN envoy on Kosovo should be appointed in the wake of deadlock on the plan for the Serbian province's future.

Russia, which has veto power in the UN Security Council, opposes Kosovo splitting from Serbia.

Ivanov said that if there is no agreement, it is necessary to continue talks and appoint a new special representative.

Current envoy Martti Ahtisaari said this month he will deliver his plan to the UN Security Council by the end of March.
