Turkey Committed To Transformation In EU Bid

April 17, 2007 -- Turkey says it is committed to transformation as part of its bid to join the European Union, whether or not that bid proves successful.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul today outlined Turkey's plans for EU harmonization.

He said Turkey will continue to reform, without questioning whether the EU will eventually accept it as a member.

Turkey's EU membership bid has stalled due to a dispute over the status of Cyprus, an EU member whose legitimacy Turkey does not recognize. Turkey stations some 40,000 troops in the northern part of the divided island.
