May 5, 2007 -- A senior U.S. official said on May 4 that the United States and Russia have agreed to hold top-level meetings amid escalating tensions.
Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said the suggestion came from the Russian side.
The meetings are expected to involve the foreign and defense ministers of both countries, and could be expanded to include the two governments' national-security advisers.
The first meeting is tentatively planned for around September, although no dates have been set.
