May 13, 2007 -- Police in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan say they clashed with militants who had fortified themselves in a building, killing at least three of the gunmen.
Daghestan's Interior Ministry spokeswoman Angela Martirosova says the fighting began on the evening of May 12 and continued until early this morning.
Daghestan has seen increased violence in recent years due to competition between criminal gangs and fighting that has spilled over from neighboring Chechnya.
