Reports Say 12 Killed In Clash Near Iran-Turkey Border

May 30, 2007 -- Reports from Tehran say seven officers from Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards were killed along with five insurgents this week during a clash in the northwest of the country.

Iran's state news agency, IRNA, says the fighting was on the evening of May 28 in a mountainous area near the town of Salmas.

The report says the fighting began when insurgents ambushed a patrol of Iranian troops close to the border with Turkey.
