NATO Chief Urges Action Against Afghan Civilian Deaths

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer with Afghan President Hamid Karzai (file photo) (NATO) June 8, 2007 -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer today urged countries in the alliance to take action to reduce civilian casualties from fighting in Afghanistan.

He called on NATO defense ministers, who are due to meet in Brussels next week, to promptly investigate reports of civilians deaths linked to NATO-led combat missions.

He said the number of civilian deaths could be lowered through better coordination between the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, the Afghan National Army, and U.S.-led coalition forces.
