June 19, 2007 -- Kazakh parliamentarians have called on President Nursultan Nazarbaev to dissolve the lower house of parliament.
In an appeal to Nazarbaev, about 50 members of the lower house, out of 77, say the decision would help speed up the country's political modernization.
The call comes after parliament passed constitutional amendments in May, which included changing the number of seats in the two houses.
Parliamentary elections had not been due until 2009.
