Press Group Criticizes Iran's 'Repressive Methods'

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad (file photo) (epa) July 12, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Reporters Without Borders says it deplores the arbitrary and repressive methods of the Iranian leadership.

In a statement issued today, the press freedom group says Iran's judiciary has in the past 10 days ordered the suspension of the daily "Ham-Mihan" (Compatriot) and the permanent closure of the "Mosharekat" (Participation) newspaper.


The Paris-based organization says the future of the news agency ILNA seems uncertain after government pressure forced its director, Masud Heydari, to resign.

IN NEED OF DIVERSIFICATION. Populist Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is having trouble fulfilling his promises to put the country's petrodollars on the plates of average citizens. Inflation and unemployment remain high and the economy is dominated by the energy sector.
