Clashes In Daghestan Leave Seven Dead

(RFE/RL) August 3, 2007 -- Police in the southern Russian republic of Daghestan say seven people have been killed during clashes between security forces and insurgents.

Police said four militants and one soldier were killed in fighting overnight. Another militant was killed in a police operation in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.

In a separate incident, the deputy chief of police in the town of Buinaksk was killed in a drive-by shooting as he was walking to work.

Police shootouts and attacks by militants are frequent in Daghestan, which neighbors war-ravaged Chechnya.
