'Separatists' Reportedly Detained In Western Iran

(RFE/RL) August 22, 2007 -- Iran has reportedly arrested several members of a "separatist group" in its western province of Khuzestan in recent days, and seized a substantial number of weapons.

Iranian media quoted a statement from the Intelligence Ministry as saying the group intended to propagate "religious sectarian division."

Earlier this month, officials said members of a "terrorist" group had been arrested before they could implement attacks in the oil-rich province, which borders Iraq.

Khuzestan Province is home to a substantial Arab population, including both Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims.

The capital of Khuzestan, Ahvaz, has been the scene of deadly bombings in the past.
