BUDAPEST, Kiev; Mar 12 (RFE/RL) - A new round
of Romania-Hungary talks on a bi-lateral treaty opens today in
Budapest. Delegations include experts from each Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. The sides will discuss a joint political
statement, which is part of the so-called Romania-Hungary "historic
reconciliation" outlined by Romania's President Ion Iliescu. Other
parts of the "reconciliation" package, including a policy on ethnic
minorities, were discussed recently in Bucharest.
Iliescu proposed the "reconcilation" package as negotiations on a full-scale, Romania-Hungary treaty stalled over disputes on minority and territorial issues.
The first session of an Advisory Inter-Governmental Romania-Ukraine Council for Economic Cooperation opens today in Kiev. Romania and Ukraine are also seeking to complete a new, bi-lateral treaty. Bucharest-Kiev disputes focus on the formerly secret protocols to the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and some territorial issues.
