Gorbachev Attacked In Omsk

Omsk, April 24, (RFE/RL) - An unknown man attacked today former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, on a pre-electoral visit to the Siberian city of Omsk.

A RFE/RL correspondent in Omsk says that Gorbachev was hit in the face. Gorbachev's aides say that Gorbachev was not injured. But following the incident Gorbachev canceled his trip in Omsk and left the city. No other details are available.

Gorbachev is a candidate in the Russian presidential election, scheduled for June 16. There is the first incident of this kind during the presidential campaign.
