Poland Introduces Restrictions on Smoking

Warsaw, April 30 (RFE/RL) - Poland is to enact tomorrow a law restricting smoking in offices, schools and other public buildings.

The bill was approved by the Sejm (parliament's lower chamber) last November. It calls for fines of up to two thousand dollars on people smoking outside of selected areas in public buildings.

The bill remains controversial. Poland is close to the top among countries whose inhabitants smoke the most in the world.

Western tobacco companies, such as Phillip Morris, Reynolds and Rothmans International, have recently made major investments in Poland's cigarette industry.
