MOSCOW, May 17 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian embassy in Vilnius has sent a protest note to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry over yesterday's shooting of a Russian diplomat in the Lithuanian capital.
ITAR-TASS news agency said the the note calls on Lithuanian authorities to investigate the shooting and to ensure an adequate level of security for Russian diplomatic personnel in Vilnius. The embassy's first secretary, Vladimir Pozdorovkin, was reportedly shot in the left leg as he tried to stop the attempted theft of his car in west Vilnius yesterday morning. Itar-Tass said Pozdorovkin is undergoing treatment at a hospital and his life is not in danger.
