Riga, June 17 (RFE/RL) - Russian voters in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania heavily supported Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov in yesterday's Russian presidential election.
Russian voters in Latvia and Estonia gave Zyuganov overwhelming support. In Estonia, the Russian Embassy said more than 23,000 Russians cast their ballots. Zyuganov got nearly 63 percent, Yeltsin 15 percent and retired general Aleksandr Lebed received 11 percent.
In neighboring Latvia, over 9,000 people voted. Zyuganov got over 64 percent, Yeltsin just under 15 percent and Lebed 10 percent.
Even in Lithuania, where most Russians also hold Lithuanian citizenship, the Russian embassy said Zyuganov had won the poll. Initial figures from Vilnius showed Zyuganov leading with 50 percent to Yeltsin's 17 percent and Lebed's 14 percent.
