Ashgabat, 20 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati today announced in Ashgabat that a regional conference on Afghanistan will be held October 28 to 29 in Teheran.
Foreign ministers including Velayati, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Boris Shikhmuradov and representatives from Afghanistan will attend.
Velayati is scheduled today to hold talks with Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov on regional concerns and on a proposed Turkmenistan-Iran natural gas pipeline project.
Velayati yesterday talked with Foreign Minister Shikhmuradov. Among the topics discussed was the Tajikistan conflict. Talks between Tajikistan's government and the Tajik opposition have been held in Ashgabat. Opposition leaders are based in Afghanistan and Iran.
