Prague, 16 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Azerbaijan and Armenia have made progress in recent talks on the secessionist Nagorno-Karabakh enclave in Azerbaijan, a top Azeri official said over the weekend.
Vafa Kuluzadeh, adviser to the Azeri president and Azeri representative to internationally-mediated peace talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, told RFE/RL that both sides are making progress. The ongoing talks are mediated by the so-called Minsk Group sponsored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Kuluzadeh also stressed the importance of Russia's role in solving the problem and said Baku is satisfied with the role played by international mediators.
Nagorno-Karabakh is an enclave in Azerbaijan on its border with Armenia. The enclave's Armenian majority has been seeking to break away from Azerbaijan since 1988. More than 10,000 people were killed in fighting before a ceasefire was agreed in May 1994.
