Foreign Ministry spokesman Erlan Bayjanov told our correspondent in Almaty today that Central Asian and Russian officials are also expected to discuss economic and political relations.
Russia's Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov are expected to attend the Almaty summit, and spokesman Bayjanov said Chernomyrdin is scheduled to hold separate talks with Kazakh officials Saturday.
Expected to attend the summit are: Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Tajikistan's President Imomoli Rakhmonov, Kyrgyzstan's President Askar Akayev, Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov and Turkmenistan's President Saparmurad Niyazov.
Summit participants are also expected to discuss security on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border. Russia's Border Guard Service Director General Andrei Nikolayev today told Interfax news agency that Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan should increase the number of troops they contribute to the Russian-led CIS peace-keeping force on the border. Nikolayev said he had also presented plans to Prime Minister Chernomyrdin for further re-inforcing of the border.
