Paris, 3 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Presidents Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia held unscheduled talks in Paris this afternoon and are expected to announce agreement on specific steps toward normalizing relations.
A smiling Milosevic told reporters after the first round of talks at a state guest house opposite the Elysee presidential palace that the talks "went well." But Izetbegovic appeared grim and said nothing to reporters.
The two men had lunch with French President Jacques Chirac, French Foreign Minister Herve de Charette and the chief international civilian representative for Bosnia, Carl Bildt.
Diplomats say Milosevic and Izetbegovic will announce an exchange of diplomatic missions and the openning of telecommunications and air links between the two former Yugoslav republics.
Bildt's spokesman Michael Maclay terms the talks "very promising."
