Armenia: Black Sea States Call For Greater Cooperation

Prague, 18 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- A two-day meeting of the interior ministers of the member states of the Black Sea Cooperation Commission ended yesterday in Yerevan, the capital of landlocked Armenia.

The participants issued a final communique announcing agreement on adopting measures to combat crime and terrorism in the region. They agreed to cooperate in joint training and exchange of information. The participants also decided to establish a regional bureau of Interpol, an international law enforcement group.

The leaders and foreign ministers of the member states of the commission are due to meet later this month in Moscow.

Our correspondent quotes delegates at today's meeting as saying they are not very optimistic about the chances of wide-ranging cooperation. They say cooperation can only be functional when based on bilateral agreements.
