Kazakhstan: Free Economic Zone Created

Almaty, 18 November 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has issued a series of decrees which would create a new free economic zone in central Kazakhstan.

Called "Jayrem-Atasu," the Jezqazgan Region would keep its status until the year 2007.

In a another decree, Nazarbayev appointed former deputy construction minister Farid Galiyev to head a state committee on moving the Kazakh capital from Almaty to Akmola in the central part of the country.

Nikolay Makiyevskiy, who headed the relocation committee up to today, has been appointed as chairman of Kazakh state Committee on Extraordinary Situations. Parliamentary deputy Sharip Omarov has been appointed as chairman of Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee in the lower house of Kazakhstan's Parliament.
