Washington, 19 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - The United States has congratulated the people of Romania and Emil Constantinescu on being elected Romania's new president.

U.S. State department spokesman Glyn Davies said yesterday the United States sees Constantinescu as a supporter of democracy and looks forward to working with him.

Davies noted that the president-elect has pledged to encourage private enterprise and reform the economy.

Davies said that "through this election, the United States believes that the people of Romania have reiterated their dedication to democratization that was started back in 1989."
