Bucharest, 19 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Romania's Central Electoral Bureau today announced final results of the second-round voting for president.

The winner, Emil Constantinescu, received 54 percent of the vote; while the incumbent, President Ion Iliescu, received 46 percent.

Our Bucharest correspondent notes that the margin of Constantinescu's victory was larger than expected. Final public opinion polls a week before the second-round vote had shown him leading by about five percentage points.
