Washington, 20 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - A senior U.S. official says American support for a new international mission in Bosnia is necessary because implementation of the Dayton peace accords remains unfinished business.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott called it "a work in progress." He spoke yesterday at a foreign policy meeting in Dayton marking the first anniversary of the signing of the Dayton accords a year ago.

They were called after the city of Dayton, Ohio where the U.S. mediated negotiations between Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia took place.

Talbott said "Dayton" has become a new word in many languages which signifies "American commitment to peace in far corners of the world."
