Kazakhstan: Energy Prices To Remain Stable In 1997

Almaty, 31 December 1996 (RFE/RL) - Kazakhstan's State Anti-monopoly Committee tells RFE/RL that prices for electricity will remain the same throughout the country next year -- and, in some regions, prices for electricity will actually decline.

A Committee official also told our correspondent that during the first three months of next year, prices for water, heating and telephone service would not change. Severe energy shortages have been reported in large areas of Kazakhstan this year, and famine conditions have been reported in several areas.
