OSCE: 'Troika' States To Discuss Serbia, Belarus, Chechnya

Copenhagen, 22 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Against the backdrop of continuing concern about the situation in Serbia, Belarus and Chechenya; the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) so-called Troika holds a one-day meeting in Copenhagen tomorrow.

The Troika consists of OSCE's previous, current and future chair states -- in this case Switzerland, Denmark and Poland -- as represented by their Foreign Ministers.

RFE/RL's correspondent in Copenhagen reports Troika talks are expected to focus on the situation in former Yugoslavia, especially the pace and problems of the peace process in Bosnia. And they are also likely to discuss Monday's election in Chechnya, and the situations in Belarus and possibly Bulgaria.

As usual, human rights will feature prominently on the agenda, as will more so-called 'structural' issues, such as the further institutional cooperation among the OSCE, the European Union, NATO and the Council of Europe.

A statement on the meeting is expected tomorrow afternoon.
