Serbia: Students And Teachers March Through Belgrade

Belgrade, 17 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - More than 10,000 students marched through downtown Belgrade again today, demanding the firing of the dean of the Serbian capital's main university.

Students accuse the dean of being a supporter of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic. The students are also demanding that police officers who beat up demonstrators last month be prosecuted along with those responsible for electoral fraud.

The students were joined by thousands of angry teachers, who blocked a street outside the Serbian government building today. The teachers want pay raises. Transport workers also backed demands for more money and better working conditions today by staging a partial public transport shutdown. They are threatening a full strike if they do not receive their backpay by tomorrow.

Serbia's opposition parties halted their daily protests after the government agreed to recognize opposition wins in local elections that had been annulled.
