Estonia: President Names Siiman New Prime Minister

Tallinn, 27 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - Estonian President Lennart Meri today named Mart Siiman as the Baltic state's new Prime Minister.

Meri's office says Siiman, a leading member of outgoing Prime Minister Tiit Vahi's coalition party, now has 14 days to form a government and present it to parliament.

Vahi, a veteran politician who had been in office since April 1995, stepped down earlier this month after only narrowly winning a no-confidence vote in parliament. The vote came amid allegations he took part in questionable privatisation deals.
