Russia: Liberal Cabinet Planned; Communists Enraged

Moscow, 12 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin said today he was forming a new government of liberal reformers. Chernomyrdin said he will bring professional market economists and firm supporters of the reform process into the government.

He did not give names but said the newcomers will be under 50 years of age with experience in state management.

Chernomyrdin said the changes will be announced before the seven-day deadline given by President Boris Yeltsin.

The move is likely to further antagonize communist and nationalist deputies who dominate the State Duma. They have already been angered by the appointment of Anatoly Chubais as sole first deputy prime minister

Opposition deputies tabled a resolution to be discussed in the parliament today which called Chubais' appointment a direct challenge to social opinion in Russia. It said his appointment contributed to what it called the worsening of relations between the presidential and executive authorities and the federal assembly.
