Kyrgyzstan: President To Sign Agreements With Kazakhstan

Almaty, 8 April 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev is scheduled today to begin a two-day visit to neighboring Kazakhstan.

Akayev and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev are expected to sign a package of investment, taxation and defense agreements, as well as an accord on "eternal friendship" between the two countries. Kyrgyzstan signed a similar agreement with Uzbekistan late last year.

A spokesman for Akayev says the Kyrgyz president also hopes to secure a deal in Almaty for the import of one million tons of Kazakh oil a year.
