Kazakhstan: Reforms Of Investigations, Customs Expected

Almaty, 23 April 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Kazakhstan's Security Council met yesterday to work out reforms of corruption investigations and border security.

Our correspondent in Almaty quotes President Nursultan Nazarbayev as saying that the state Investigation Committee will look into economic and military crimes, as well as corruption involving high-ranking officials. Borders security will be controlled by a commission that is led by General Beksultan Sarsekov, the Secretary of the State Security Council.

Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that new customs control points are scheduled to open on Friday at the Kazakh municipalities of Arqalyq, Jezqazgan, Qyzyl�Orda, Kokshetau, Pavlodar, Petropavlovsk, Taldy�Qorgan, Semey and Oskemen. Customs controls at 26 Kazakh railroad stations are scheduled to start working near the borders of Russia and China by mid-May.
