Turkmenistan: Cabinet Meets On Gas Debts

Ashgabat, 6 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Turkmenistan's Cabinet has discussed debts owed Ashgabat for natural gas supplies.

Our correspondent reports President Saparmurad Niyazov chaired yesterday's meeting, which focused on why this week's planned visit by Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma was postponed.

Turkmen officials in Kyiv over the weekend say they were told that Ukraine was unprepared to pay a debt of more than $200 million, suggesting Russia was also involved in supply-and-transport issues with Turkmenistan.

Our correspondent reports that the Cabinet meeting also sent a message to Georgia, demanding payment on debts of more than $400 million.
